We should also allow states to decide on gun control, same sex unionsas well as well as abortion. We could also put loitering up for a vote. what about smoking and gambling? if the voters decide against an issue than it is stopped. Let the voters decide, if you have the courage.

I agree with you on that big eddie, we should let the voters decide on as many issues as possible. That's a pure democracy. As for being divided, you are mistaken, Derek. We are united in the belief that the government should not be used to enforce morality. What you do with yourself is your business, not mine.

Pure democracy sucks and is exactly what our founders sought to avoid.

"it may be concluded that a pure democracy...can admit of no cure for the mischiefs of faction...[as] there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual. Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." - the Federalist Papers

In a pure democracy the rights of the minority are trampled by the rights of the majority. In a democratic Iraq the Shia shall enslave the Sunni majority. A democratic Germany gave rise to the Nazi's. Democracy in our school districts have the majority sucking more and more money out of the minority.

Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America does a good job describing the problems with democracy.

Good point, Jay, and one that should not be forgotten. The question we are faced with now though is a case of the lesser of two evils. Which is worse, a pure democracy where the individual's rights are stripped by the might of the mob, or a republic where the individual's rights are slowly usurped by the social elite?

There is no such thing as a pure democracy. That is an ideal that can never be attained.Since man is flawed anything he designs is also flawed. The imperfect can never achieve the perfect.I could never put my trust in any man or group, They can never succeed. When someone asks me to put my faith and trust in him or his party, that is something I cannot do.Icould never put my hope, trust or faith in an individual, group or idea.
