Bob Barr and U.S. Internet Surveillance

Details
Written by: Walter M. Luers, Esq.
Category: Candidates and Elections
Created: August 29, 2008

At last night's excellent event at Luciano's, Bob Barr addressed (among other things) how the United States intercepts and reviews emails based on whether the interceptor reasonably believes one party to the communication is outside of the country.  For this and other reasons, many do not trust the privacy and security of email and electronic communications, because the United States government intercepts, stores, and reviews those communications.

The principal reason the Unites States government has this ability is because most Internet traffic in the world is routed through the United States.  An article in tomorrow's (Aug. 30, 2008) New York Times addresses the current free-market response to the U.S.'s invasion of privacy:  more Internet traffic is now being routed outside of the United States, and businesses and companies are aggressively building Internet infrastructure outside of the United States.  While certainly some amount of development outside of the U.S. is inevitable, I have no doubt that the U.S. has lost some amount of commerce because its government does not respect the privacy of communications through the Internet.

And, it also increases the ability of true enemies of the United States to hide their Internet communications from legitimate surveillance techniques (e.g., those performed pursuant to a warrant issued by a judge that is based upon a showing of probable cause).

I Have Had Enough!

Fellow patriots,

Last week, a Republican Party official filed a lawsuit in the State of Pennsylvania to keep the Libertarian Party off the ballot in November. Basing the lawsuit on a substitution technicality the merits of the case are scheduled to be heard September 4, 2008 in Philadelphia. After collecting over fifty thousand signatures and an enormous strain on our manpower and monetary resources I must ask the question, when is enough, enough. We know they don't want us in the debates, but if they will fight tooth and nail to keep us off the ballot it begs the question what type of government would they run if elected. We must begin to take a stand and let them know this will no longer be tolerated. For the next two and a half months we have our opportunity to unite and send a message this is no longer acceptable. So what can you do?

Start by joining Bob Barr and Jason Scheurer at Luciano's at 1579 Main Street in Rahway, New Jersey, this Thursday beginning at 8PM as we simulcast our message across the country. We will be joined by Wayne Root in Denver as he reports on the Democratic convention as well as others around the country. Make your voice heard.

In Liberty,
Lou Jasikoff

Message from National LP

From the Libertarian Party:

A text message arrived at my phone this morning announced that Democratic Senator Barack Obama had selected Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate.  I looked at it, said, "No surprise there," and went back to sleep.

After all, there isn't much to Biden that the public doesn't already know.  He's a career Senator with more than 30-year history of being a "Congress critter." Biden is not only a part of the political establishment, he's a senior member of it!

In fact, Biden has only spent four years working in the private sector after graduating from college.

As our acting Executive Director said, Biden's pick was "predictable and typical."

Under New Jersey's new law, possession of BB gun merits three-year sentence

CENTRAL JERSEY —Caught speeding in Highland Park in April in his father's Acura RSX, Ryan Narciso found out the hard way about a recent change in a New Jersey gun law that could send him to prison for three years.

The 20-year-old sales clerk at a shop at Menlo Park Mall and former Middlesex County College student had a pellet handgun in the car, according to an indictment filed last week in Superior Court, New Brunswick.

Only in NJ is a BB gun classified as a firearm. According to NJ State law a firearm can be defined as:

It shall also include, without limitation, any firearm which is in the nature of an air gun, spring gun or pistol or other weapon of a similar nature in which the propelling force is a spring, elastic band, carbon dioxide, compressed or other gas, or vapor, air or compressed air, or is ignited by compressed air, and ejecting a bullet or missile smaller than three-eighths of an inch in diameter, with sufficient force to injure a person.

I have just spent the first full day at our new Atlantic City office at South Sovereign and Boardwalk, between the Hilton and Tropicana and must tell you all that I am very excited about the amount of traffic we have. Dozens of people stopped in to talk with us. Some of them were wondering what the Libertarian Party was, others already knew about us and were amazed to see us in public. More than a few of the stop-ins were from Party members from other states as well as college students from Rutgers, Temple, University of Maryland, University of Delaware, John Hopkins, and others. These party faithful were ecstatic to see us out and getting active. Dozens more people stopped to stare in wonder that we really existed as a political party! I can't count how many people walked by, looked at our beautiful sign, and continued on their way while discussing the Libertarian Party and the Bob Barr Presidential campaign.

As of June 13 Jason Scheurer and Derek DeMarco are officially on the ballot for U.S. Senate and U.S. Congress (District 8) in New Jersey. I want to thank everyone who got involved and gathered signatures on their behalf to make this happen. (See page 2 for the Honor Roll of petitioners and the initial press release for the campaign. – Editor) It was encouraging to see so many get involved.

Going forward we will need everyone's help to run the successful campaign we are planning. You can expect to be contacted shortly by me or one of our expanding staff to ask what you can do and the level of commitment you are willing to make. There will be a role for everyone who chooses to help make this campaign successful. We will need an enormous amount of help to man the events that are planned and are going to be planned for the coming months. The campaign is starting to fall into place. Thanks for all the help so far and I think we are going to make real progress this year.

For those of you who don't know me I work in the food industry. This means that I deal with OSHA, FDA, USDA, and other government acronyms. But something rather disturbing has occurred that truly scares me in a way that none of these agencies ever had. The state of Florida is buying U.S. Sugar for $1.7 billion.

© New Jersey Libertarian Party 1972 - 2025

The NJ Libertarian Party is NJ's third largest political party, founded in 1972. Our vision is for a world in which all individuals have the right to exercise sole control over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live as they choose. Our goal is to build a political party that elects Libertarians to public office, and moves public policy in a libertarian direction.
