After many years of overspending by both Republican and Democratic administrations, NJ state finds itself in a fiscal mess. Instead of tackling the root cause of a bloated state government, our governor has launched a plan to transfer debt and to squeeze more money out of the taxpayers.

Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone (D-31) is following in the footsteps of former legislators who proposed ending fishing and hunting in New Jersey by removing sportsmen and farmers from the New Jersey Fish & Game Council, thus creating a non-lethal committee within the council to deal with so-called “wildlife conflicts.”

Congressman, Presidential candidate, and former Libertarian Presidential candidate Ron Paul has been attacked by many.  Several have tried to pin the "racist" tag on him.

Nelson Linder, president of the Austin National Association of Colored People during an interview with Alex Jones has stated, "Knowing Ron Paul's intent, I think he is trying to improve this country but I think also, when you talk about the Constitution and you constantly criticize the federal government versus state I think a lot of folks are going to misconstrue that....so I think it's very easy for folks who want to to take his position out of context and that's what I'm hearing," said Linder.

"Knowing Ron Paul and having talked to him, I think he's a very fair guy I just think that a lot of folks do not understand the Libertarian platform"

No comments on “Manasquan Honors NJLP Request to Change Minutes Disclosure Policy”

According to the Coast Star of December 20, 2007 Manasquan Borough agreed to amend its policy so that disclosure of closed
session minutes no longer relies on formal "approval" by the council. The article began by describing John Paff,” a member of the New Jersey Libertarian Party and chairman of the party's Open Government Advocacy Project,” who had requested the closed session minutes of a number of council meetings

As reported in the newspaper, the council discussed Mr. Paff's letter urging the borough to alter its policy to speed up the release of closed session meeting minutes. At the meeting of the mayor and council. It was decided that the clerk, township administrator, and borough counsel could review the documents together before releasing them. The step where the council would formally resolve to release the records would be eliminated. John says “this might shave a week or two from responses to requests.”

Seeking the “naked truth” from Long Hill Board os Ed

With attorney Walter Luers representing him, John sued the Long Hill (Morris County) school board so that he could either confirm or dispute unverified statements on the Internet that a former, male member of the Long Hill Board of Education told a female member of the school district's administration that "If you take your clothes off, you can have anything you want in [administrative contract] negotiations."

After having received a heavily redacted copy of the Board's
nonpublic (i.e. closed or executive session) minutes from April 23, 2007 in response to an earlier records request, he found an on-line article that claimed that "reliable sources" had reported that a former Board of Education member had allegedly made the above-described comment that ultimately resulted in the member's resignation from the Board and the female administrator filing a grievance and taking an extended medical leave

By Len Flynn, NJ Libertarian Editor

This article contains interviews with NJLP members who have visited New Hampshire, the home of the libertarian “Free State Project .” (FSP). The FSP encourages libertarians to emigrate and establish residence in NH with the goal to facilitate libertarian political action and reforms there–or at least by preventing or limiting socialist/statist developments. After all, what libertarian could argue with the state motto: “Live Free or Die”?

New Hampshire has two FSP annual events where visitors and residents can celebrate freedom. From January 3 to Sunday January 6 the 2008 NH Liberty Forum will be held in Nashua, NH. This event is immediately prior to the primary elections on January 8, and the final scheduled speaker is Presidential candidate Ron Paul. The 2008 Porcupine Freedom Festival PorcFest 2008 will take place on June 9 to June 15, 2008 at the Gunstock Mountain Resort in Guilford, NH.

Darren Young
Assembly, 21st District

Darren YoungDarren Young ran as a trademark candidate in District 21 this year. There were no debates, and his two Republican opponents were both very well-liked and very prolimited government. In any case they easily won with about 65 percent of the vote. He is hoping to once again run against pro-Bush, big-government Republican Mike Ferguson as the NJLP Congressional candidate next year from District 7. He has garnered significant positive publicity for the party by making numerous television appearances during the four other times he has run for this position.

Open Government Task Force Strikes Again

On June 26, 2007, during a public meeting, the Evesham Township (Burlington County) suspended a kindergarten teacher, with pay, for "improper interaction with a student in her charge."

For the last several weeks, John Paff of the NJLP Open Government task force has been trying to learn the nature of the "improper interaction" so that he (and others--especially parents and taxpayers in Evesham) can be in a position to judge whether the paid suspension was appropriate. As expected, the Board has completely denied him access to any and all information regarding this matter.

See John's letter to the Board's attorney.

In a recent “Guest Contributor” column, a writer expressed are discussed with Congressman Scott Garrett’s voting record. She was also upset that three local candidates appeared in a photo in another newspaper with Congressman Garrett.

I have to be honest, I voted for Scott Garrett once in 2002, the first time he ran for Congress. I truly hoped that he would be another force for individual liberty, limited constitutional government and free market economics, like the truly great and principled Congressman Ron Paul of Texas (the only sane presidential candidate of those Republicans seeking the 2008 nomination.)

Our U.S. Representative in Congress, Scott Garrett, has been taking a lot of heat lately by not supporting the animal fighting prohibition enforcement act, which grew out of the frenzy over the Michael Vick dogfighting case. Far from being attacked by “animal rights” groups and the press, Rep. Garrett should be praised for his clear understanding and interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. I have before me my pocket size edition of the Constitution published by libertarian Cato Institute.

On November 12, 2007 NJLP Chairman Lou Jasikoff and I attended the Eagleton Institute of Politics panel discussion on publicly funded elections in New Jersey. For this year’s experimental test of the so-called “fair and clean elections” (FACE) process, candidates in three state legislative districts were required to collect a minimum of 400 $10 contributions from residents of the district to qualify for “clean elections” labeling and funding. In the 14th District Libertarian Assembly candidate Jason Scheurer managed to meet that standard.

The NJ Libertarian Party is NJ's third largest political party, founded in 1972. Our vision is for a world in which all individuals have the right to exercise sole control over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live as they choose. Our goal is to build a political party that elects Libertarians to public office, and moves public policy in a libertarian direction.
